ABU DHABI // The UAE has spent Dh485 million on aid to assist Yemen, a report has shown.
The Ministry of International Cooperation and Development reported that Yemen was short of food and medicines because of the current conflict.
The aid was sent following the directives of the President Sheikh Khalifa, and was sent via several charity organisations in the country including the Emirates Red Crescent and Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, the Zayed Foundation for Charitable and Humanitarian Works.
S A, a Yemeni who lives in Abu Dhabi, said he appreciated the efforts of “his second home” to help his homeland.
“The UAE has done much more than expected in helping [Yemen] to fight the Houthis. Sending the aid shows the brotherly ties will remain intact,” he said.
The largest amount spent was on electricity – Dh170 million – and foodstuffs, at Dh131m.
Medical supplies sent to Yemen cost Dh73m while the cost of water and sanitation products were Dh31 million.
Fuel and shelter were also provided, costing Dh12 million and Dh10 million respectively.
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, said the UAE was among the first countries to provide relief to Yemen and that such efforts were intended to end the suffering of the people.
Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Development and International Cooperation, backed Sheikh Mansour’s stance.
“The UAE is committed to the alleviation of the crisis on the affected Yemenis by identifying and providing urgent humanitarian needs, which include food, medical, water and sanitation, fuel,” she said.
“The UAE does not hesitate to provide relief aid to those affected by all humanitarian crises,” she said.

Iftar programme at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
Established in 1998, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding was created with a vision to teach residents about the traditions and customs of the UAE. Its motto is ‘open doors, open minds’. All year-round, visitors can sign up for a traditional Emirati breakfast, lunch or dinner meal, as well as a range of walking tours, including ones to sites such as the Jumeirah Mosque or Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood.
Every year during Ramadan, an iftar programme is rolled out. This allows guests to break their fast with the centre’s presenters, visit a nearby mosque and observe their guides while they pray. These events last for about two hours and are open to the public, or can be booked for a private event.
Until the end of Ramadan, the iftar events take place from 7pm until 9pm, from Saturday to Thursday. Advanced booking is required.

How to join and use Abu Dhabi’s public libraries
• There are six libraries in Abu Dhabi emirate run by the Department of Culture and Tourism, including one in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
• Libraries are free to visit and visitors can consult books, use online resources and study there. Most are open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, closed on Fridays and have variable hours on Saturdays, except for Qasr Al Watan which is open from 10am to 8pm every day.
• In order to borrow books, visitors must join the service by providing a passport photograph, Emirates ID and a refundable deposit of Dh400. Members can borrow five books for three weeks, all of which are renewable up to two times online.
• If users do not wish to pay the fee, they can still use the library’s electronic resources for free by simply registering on the website. Once registered, a username and password is provided, allowing remote access.
