UAE leaders have discussed plans to further strengthen the bond between the seven emirates at a National Day meeting of the Federal Supreme Council.
At a high-powered assembly at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi, chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, efforts to bolster links between federal and local government structures were on the agenda.
The meeting was attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and the rulers of each of the emirates, Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi of Sharjah, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi of Fujairah, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla of Umm Al Qaiwain, and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Union and called for increased integration and co-ordination to order to further advance the nation's development, by strengthening its federal structures and empowering the Emirati people.
During the meeting, the council members exchanged greetings on the milestone occasion of the 47th anniversary of the founding of the UAE and passed on congratulations to President Sheikh Khalifa, for continuing the legacy of the Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed.
The leaders also praised the sacrifices made by the nation's armed forces in battle.
The Federal Supreme Council members discussed matters relating to the welfare of the nation and its citizens. They also commented on regional and international developments, praising the role played by UAE diplomacy.
They also noted the importance of their meeting this year, which also coincides with the momentous and successful launch of the UAE's KhalifaSat, marking the nation's embarking new developments in the space and technologies sectors, with the aim to attain the objectives of the UAE Vision 2021 and the country's centennial Vision 2071.
The Council members extended their thanks and appreciation to Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, and his team for their efforts that led to the UAE attaining the most powerful passport status in the world.

TERMINAL HIGH ALTITUDE AREA DEFENCE (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US's most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was created in 2008.
Speed:
THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out ballistic missiles as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".
Purpose:
To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.
Range:
THAAD can target projectiles inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 150 kilometres above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.
UAE and THAAD:
In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then stationed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.
