Leaders in the Emirates have wished the Kuwaiti people and their ruler, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad, a happy National Day. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, posted a tribute to the country on Twitter on Monday night. "To our family and brothers in beloved Kuwait, all the congratulations on your glorious national holidays and a special congratulations from the people of the Emirates to the Emir of Kuwait, the Emir of Humanitarianism, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad. May God protect him and may God protect you," he said, referring to the Humanitarian Award presented to the Kuwaiti emir by the former United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon in 2014. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, also wished Kuwait a happy National Day. "We share [Kuwait's] joy, praying to God to preserve their security, stability and prosperity under the leadership of the wise Emir. Our fraternal relations and historical ties are strong and firmly established," he said. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, shared his congratulations in an Instagram story that showed a portrait of Sheikh Sabah displayed within Dubai Frame. "My greetings and love for the Kuwaiti people. We congratulate you and your Emir of Humanitarianism on your National Day," his message read. On Tuesday, passengers arriving at Abu Dhabi International Airport from Kuwait were greeted with sweets, flag and gifts in celebration of the country's National Day. In Dubai, a line up of events to commemorate the day were planned, including a concert at Global Village by Kuwaiti band Miami, a fireworks display and traditional music performances at Dubai Frame. Last year, to mark the occasion, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid commissioned a giant portrait of Sheikh Sabah in the desert. Etched across 15,800 square metres of the emirate's desert, near Al Qudra Lakes, the artistic tribute, named Prince of Humanity, took more than 2,400 hours to create. The portrait was created to mark Kuwait's two-day celebration: National Day and Liberation Day. National Day celebrates Sheikh Abdulla Al Sabah's accession to the throne in 1950. It was originally celebrated on June 19, when Kuwait gained independence from the British, but the date was moved due to concerns over summer heat. And Liberation Day celebrates the anniversary of the end of the first Gulf War, when Kuwait was officially liberated from Iraq. Kuwait's National Day will be celebrated in many parts of UAE, with fireworks dotting the skies as well as food and entertainment.
