The UAE recorded 1,958 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, taking the country’s tally of cases since the outbreak to 495,224. Another 1,545 people recovered from the virus, with the total number of recoveries now at 478,063. Three more people died from complications caused by Covid-19, raising the death toll to 1,550. The UAE remains one of the top three nations in the world in terms of vaccinating its residents and citizens against coronavirus. More than 9.3 million doses of the vaccine have been administered across the Emirates and widespread testing continues to be an integral part in curbing the spread of the virus. On Saturday, the Ministry of Health and Prevention said 214,765 people underwent PCR tests in the previous 24 hours. The global death toll from the coronavirus pandemic was on the cusp of topping three million on Friday. The US has recorded the most deaths – more than half a million – followed by Brazil, Mexico and India. The head of the World Health Organisation said coronavirus cases are continuing to rise globally at "worrying" rates and blamed part of the rise on more infectious variants first detected in the UK and South Africa.
