Dubai Municipality will look to new technology to improve food safety by tracking poisoning outbreaks and establishing self-monitoring systems in food outlets, officials said on Monday.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of the municipality, spoke about trending technologies that will be used in the near future to monitor the food industry at the launch of the 11th Dubai International Conference on Food Safety, which will take place from November 19 to 21.
“The topics that will be discussed and concentrated on at the conference are about smart solutions, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) and electronic sensing tools,” he said.
“The techniques used internationally to find innovative solutions to the challenges to food safety will be discussed, and how regulatory authorities can use these techniques to adopt the required food safety measures.”
Mr Lootah also spoke about how social media can spread false information.

“I urge the public not to be deceived by rumours spread on social media. Rumors on social media are baseless,” said Mr Lootah.
“There will be a special session [at the conference] on the role of media in food safety and nutrition.”
Noura Al Shamsi, chairwoman of the conference organising committee, added: “A specialised exhibition is being organised on the sidelines of the conference that will showcase integrated solutions for food safety by various companies working in the field of IT and electronic and smart solutions. Food regulatory authorities, food testing laboratories, food training and consulting companies will also participate in the exhibition.”
A total of 2,500 participants are expected to attend the conference this year.
