Seven patients who were diagnosed with swine flu after entering the UAE from abroad have been discharged from hospital having made a full recovery, the state news agency, WAM, reported yesterday. The announcement, from the Ministry of Health, means that all 27 people reported to have the virus in the UAE have recovered fully. Caused by a new virus called H1N1, swine flu is potentially lethal for the young and elderly, as well as those with weakened immune systems. The World Health Organisation's most recent report, dated July 6, lists 429 deaths out of more than 94,000 confirmed cases worldwide.
The Emirates' first swine flu patient was an academic from UAE University in Al Ain who had been on a visit to Canada. The man was treated at Al Ain's Tawam Hospital and discharged in May. The symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of other seasonal flu viruses. They include high fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported vomiting and diarrhoea.

What are NFTs?

You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.

What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.
