Major road improvement works are continuing in a busy part of Abu Dhabi.
Works in the Al Zahiyah area, formerly known as Tourist Club, include cycle lanes, streamlined roads and new LED street lights.
The area around Abu Dhabi Mall has long been traffic clogged, with bollards along many streets making it hard for pedestrians. The works are set to address this. Al Ferdous Street and Street No 10 are being redesigned with pedestrians in mind, while there will be easier access to hotels, the mall and other buildings in the area. There will also be more seats and shaded areas.
The Dh248 million Al Zahiyah Development Project will also result in an upgraded LED street lighting system, saving electricity consumption by as much as 60 per cent. This is in line with plans to convert all old street lights in the city to new LED lights.
Additional areas and pedestrian pathways spanning 122,500 square meters will be provided, along with cycling tracks along Al Ferdous Street and Street No 10 of 2,550 metres.
The works are set to finish early next year when it is expected that public areas will have expanded from 8,300 sq m to 14,200 sq m.
The Al Zahya Development Project will also make it easier to access the four bridges linking the area to Al Maryah Island.
The works are being carried out by Abu Dhabi Municipality in cooperation with Musanda. The municipality said the support of residents, despite the inconvenience caused, was important to their successful conclusion.

Closing the loophole on sugary drinks
As The National reported last year, non-fizzy sugared drinks were not covered when the original tax was introduced in 2017. Sports drinks sold in supermarkets were found to contain, on average, 20 grams of sugar per 500ml bottle.
The non-fizzy drink AriZona Iced Tea contains 65 grams of sugar – about 16 teaspoons – per 680ml can. The average can costs about Dh6, which would rise to Dh9.
Drinks such as Starbucks Bottled Mocha Frappuccino contain 31g of sugar in 270ml, while Nescafe Mocha in a can contains 15.6g of sugar in a 240ml can.
Flavoured water, long-life fruit juice concentrates, pre-packaged sweetened coffee drinks fall under the ‘sweetened drink’ category
Not taxed:
Freshly squeezed fruit juices, ground coffee beans, tea leaves and pre-prepared flavoured milkshakes do not come under the ‘sweetened drink’ band.

The more serious side of specialty coffee
While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.
The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers. For instance, Mokha 1450 on Al Wasl Road strives to work predominantly with women-owned and -operated coffee organisations, including female farmers in the Sabree mountains of Yemen.
Because, as the boutique’s owner, Garfield Kerr, points out: “women represent over 90 per cent of the coffee value chain, but are woefully underrepresented in less than 10 per cent of ownership and management throughout the global coffee industry.”
One of the UAE’s largest suppliers of green (meaning not-yet-roasted) beans, Raw Coffee, is a founding member of the Partnership of Gender Equity, which aims to empower female coffee farmers and harvesters.
Also, globally, many companies have found the perfect way to recycle old coffee grounds: they create the perfect fertile soil in which to grow mushrooms.
