Japan’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Kanji Fujiki, has visited the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre.
He discussed ways to develop bilateral relations in space science, technology and research with executives at the centre.
During the visit, Mr Fujiki was briefed on the centre’s notable projects, such as the Emirates Mars Mission – Hope Probe as well as KhalifaSat, DubaiSat-2 and DubaiSat-1.
Salem Humaid Al Marri, the assistant director general for scientific and technical affairs at MBRSC, showed the ambassador the space centre’s primary facilities.
These included satellite manufacturing facilities and laboratories, as well as the ground station from which DubaiSat-2 and DubaiSat-1 are run.
Mr Al Marri emphasised the strong relationship between Japan and the UAE, especially in space research and technology.
He also praised Japan’s achievements and innovations in the sector.
“We have had rewarding collaborations with Japanese authorities in the past and companies that specialise in space science, most notably the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency [Jaxa], following the launch of DubaiSat-2.
“The satellite contained an electric propulsion system developed with Jaxa, and one of Japan’s leading companies has been tasked with the launch of KhalifaSat. Our joint ventures are proof of our confidence in Japan’s leading role in space technology. We hope to continue expanding our cooperation, especially now that the United Arab Emirates is involved in the exploration of outer space,” he said.

La Mer lowdown
La Mer beach is open from 10am until midnight, daily, and is located in Jumeirah 1, well after Kite Beach. Some restaurants, like Cupagahwa, are open from 8am for breakfast; most others start at noon. At the time of writing, we noticed that signs for Vicolo, an Italian eatery, and Kaftan, a Turkish restaurant, indicated that these two restaurants will be open soon, most likely this month. Parking is available, as well as a Dh100 all-day valet option or a Dh50 valet service if you’re just stopping by for a few hours.
