The Palm Jumeirah will take centre stage for the Dubai Fitness Challenge when the month-long initiative gets underway next week.
Hundreds of free activities are planned from October 26 to encourage residents across Dubai to carry out 30 minutes of exercise every day.
Activities at Palm Jumeirah are taking place from Sunday, October 28, until Thursday, November 22.
The challenge is in its second year and aims to encourage people to make permanent lifestyle changes to improve their health, reducing obesity rates and the risk of long-term chronic illnesses like diabetes.
At Al Ittihad Park at the heart of The Palm, joggers will be invited to take part in a nightly run along a 3.2km track complete with themed lighting.
There will also be a full programme of daily activities organised in the park as well as at the adjacent Golden Mile Galleria mall, with tailored events for children and people of determination.
“After our hugely successful participation in the first Dubai Fitness Challenge last year, we are proud to be back with an even stronger presence at the 2018 event,” said Ali Rashid Lootah, chairman of Nakheel, the developer which built the Palm Jumeirah.
“Al Ittihad Park at Palm Jumeirah is the perfect venue to bring residents, visitors and employees together to get involved in this wonderful initiative.
“We fully accept the challenge and hope others will do the same.”
Nakheel hopes to follow its successful participation in last year’s event, when staff clocked up more than 300 hours of physical activity during the month.
The company topped off its efforts with 300 staff hiking 15km to the summit of Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE.
The initiative will start with a two-day weekend carnival at Dubai Festival City from 2pm on October 26, where more than 25 fitness classes, including yoga, spinning, dancing and basketball, will be held.

Weather warnings show that Storm Eunice is soon to make landfall. The videographer and I are scrambling to return to the other side of the Channel before it does. As we race to the port of Calais, I see miles of wire fencing topped with barbed wire all around it, a silent ‘Keep Out’ sign for those who, unlike us, aren’t lucky enough to have the right to move freely and safely across borders.
We set sail on a giant ferry whose length dwarfs the dinghies migrants use by nearly a 100 times. Despite the windy rain lashing at the portholes, we arrive safely in Dover; grateful but acutely aware of the miserable conditions the people we’ve left behind are in and of the privilege of choice.
