A man being held by police in connection with a string of thefts escaped a detention room – only to climb back in after his attempt was thwarted.
The Egyptian engineer, 27, was being held in a fenced-off detention room at Al Muraqqabat Police Station when he made his bid for freedom, Dubai Criminal Court heard.
He climbed the fence, only to fall on his way out of the room, making a loud noise which raised the alarm, a police officer said.
“He was being held in the criminal investigations detention which is a fenced room with little space between the fence and the ceiling,” said the Yemeni officer, 52.
The officer attempted to stop the defendant, who then pushed him away to try to make his way out of the station.
“He tried to run out of the room but I caught him. Then he grabbed my right arm and twisted it and pushed me to the wall, so I fell.
“Then he headed to the prosecutions office and found the door locked. He then started searching for an exit but when he found no way out, he climbed the fence back into the detention area.”
A police backup team was called into the station and the accused was brought under control.
The ceiling was damaged during his escape attempt, court records stated.
The incident took place at 5.30am on May 31.
The accused denied charges of resisting police officers and damaging property when he appeared before Dubai Criminal Court.
A verdict is expected on September 20.
