ABU DHABI // A man who smuggled heroin into the country in his shoes has had his death sentence reduced to 10 years in prison.
The Pakistani was told how to travel from his homeland to the UAE by land and sea in exchange for delivering heroin powder, the court was told.
He was told his family's lives would be at risk if he told anyone.
But when he arrived in the UAE and went to meet the dealer, he was detained by a police agent.
Court records show he did not resist arrest and that he told the police he was tired and hungry.
Heroin was found in his blood and powder was found in his shoes.
The Criminal Court sentenced him to death for smuggling drugs and four years for using drugs.
But the Appeals Court ordered the powder found in his shoes be tested again.
It was discovered that of the 468 grams of powder found, only 2 per cent of it, or 6g, was heroin.
