ABU DHABI // A Mawaqif employee insulted the Government and its laws while issuing a ticket to a parking violator, the criminal court heard on Wednesday.
T A was reported by motorist H S and his brother, R S, after he stopped them to issue them a fine.
According to their statements, T A said if the Government increase the severity of fines there would be no more violators.
The witnesses said that he claimed the UAE’s laws were illogical, and then denounced the “legislative national council”.
“We do not have a legislative national council,” said his defence lawyer, Tarek Al Serkal. “The allegations don’t make sense.”
H S claimed that T A began citing laws with numbers and specific articles to criticise them.
“How would he (T A) know all the laws and their numbers in detail on the spot?” said Mr Al Serkal. “He is a normal person whose job is to fine violators, where will he know all the laws from?
“The facts are all based on the statements of the accuser and his brother, there is no evidence that my client said any of these things.”
H S then claimed that T A jumped onto a different subject and started complaining that his parents were Emirati but he was still a Yemeni because he did not pass a security check.
“Is it possible that he would stop a stranger on the road to fine him, and then start sharing with him details about his parents and complain about his status? Even though the accuser did not ask him about his social status.”
R S was H S’s brother and it was illegal to take into account the testimony of a person on behalf of his or her sibling, the lawyer said.
“It is a legal legislative violation,” said Mr Al Serkal.
T A said he was innocent.
A verdict will be announced on November 4.

Fourth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit

"We've got a big jar of mixed seeds in our kitchen," Theasby explains. "That's what you use to make a bolognese or pie or salad: just grab a handful of seeds and sprinkle them over the top. It's a really good way to make sure you're getting your omegas."
