Police link car theft accused to 39 crimes, Dubai court told

DUBAI // Two men who appeared in court charged with breaking into a car last year were linked to 38 similar thefts by police.

The Emiratis, aged 23 and 25, denied charges of theft and causing damage to a car when they appeared at Dubai Criminal Court.

On December 10, 2016, a 36-year-old Indian called police after the window of his Mitsubishi was smashed and several bank cards, Dh3,250 in cash and other official documents were stolen.

Earlier this year the defendants were arrested while trying to break into a car in Al Rashidiya. Police connected them to the theft from the Mitsubishi and 38 other incidents.

“They couldn’t remember the details of all the incidents during questioning,” said an Emirati officer.

The Indian victim said the defendants contacted him and admitted to stealing from his car and begged him to drop charges. A verdict will be issued on May 14.
