'Science and art' of hostage negotiation

DUBAI // Airport security personnel from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Yemen underwent hostage negotiation training in Dubai yesterday.

The workshop, organised by Dubai Police Decision Making Support Centre (DMSC), aimed to develop the skills of law enforcements personnel involved in airport security and train them to respond quickly to emergencies.

Yesterday's workshop focused on negotiating techniques for the release of hostages.

"Negotiation is both a science and an art," Dr Mohammed Abdullah, the head of the DMSC, told the gathering. "There are many factors that play a role in the negotiation process, such as the security situation as well as the qualities of the negotiators themselves.

"The negotiation process needs to be based on concrete foundations and very specific security calculations to ensure the success of the task without suffering great losses."
