SHARJAH // Land connected to the abandoned Al Sahab Tower project in Al Majaz has been seized by the Sharjah courts, which will auction it to raise money for investors. Work on the project, which had attracted Dh85 million in investment capital, was halted while its foundation was still being laid and its developer fled the country. The date of the auction has yet to be decided. "We have already a list of 600 claimants that have filed a case with us," said Mohammed al Kamali, the director of the Sharjah Federal Supreme Court. "We are verifying everyone's claims and would compensate them all after auctioning the land. The court will decide what to compensate each claimant after selling off the land."
The project was to consist of a luxurious 56-storey residential tower overlooking Al Buhairah Corniche. Almost all of its flats were sold before construction began under Modern Home Real Estate, which was owned by Mousa Obaid al Harbi, a Saudi national. The developer fled the country with the investors' money. "The court has been taking time to investigate the case and its claimants," he said. "Investors have been regularly visiting the court to help in the investigations for the last five years.

La Mer lowdown

Some restaurants, like Cupagahwa, are open from 8am for breakfast; most others start at noon. At the time of writing, we noticed that signs for Vicolo, an Italian eatery, and Kaftan, a Turkish restaurant, indicated that these two restaurants will be open soon, most likely this month. Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion
The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.
Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".
The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.
He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.
"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.
As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.
