A motorist pulled over for driving dangerously tried to get out of a ticket by telling police he was a diplomat, Dubai Criminal Court was told.
On May 2, police stopped a Kuwaiti man, 30, for speeding and driving recklessly in Al Barsha. When they asked him for an ID card, he refused to present one and claimed to be a diplomat.
"He said he was the consul's son and that he was a diplomat. We asked him to present documents to prove his identity but he declined and said we should do it ourselves," said an Emirati police officer, 35.
The policeman said the man then began insulting him and his colleague and tried to punch one of them.
"We tried to handcuff him but he resisted and started threatening both of us, saying that a person like him will not spend a minute in custody," said the officer.
The accused allegedly told them that they would both be fired after he called Lt Gen Dhahi Khalfan, head of general security for Dubai, to complain.
The second police officer told the court that the defendant's attack left them with minor injuries.
In court on Monday, the Kuwaiti denied charges of assaulting, threatening and insulting police officers.
The next hearing is scheduled for November 5.
