A drug used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will be more tightly controlled following a decision by the UAE's health ministry.
Atomoxetine will be made more difficult to acquire to prevent abuse, according to the Higher Committee for the Monitoring and Review of Schedules of Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances at the ministry of health.
Dr Amin Hussein Al Amiri, assistant undersecretary for public health policy and chairman of the committee, said it would work with authorities across the country to protect the community against narcotics and psychotropic substances that cause a health and social problems.
Stricter control of the drug follows the release of controversial Netflix documentary, which shed light on the abuse of drugs used to treat ADHD.
Take Your Pills focuses on everyone from students and athletes to stockbrokers and computer code writers, who believe the drugs help them to focus and get ahead in their careers.
The programme tells of how abusers seek to achieve the "jet fuel" feeling of being able to do anything before crashing physically.
It focuses on how they slip into addiction and lose focus without taking the pills.
