<em>The National</em> won seven accolades at the 20th European Newspaper Award, a competition that recognises the most creative and innovative design work in newspapers and on websites. The awards came in a variety of categories. In the cover-story category, the Art&Lifestyle section won for its story on China’s increasingly intrusive surveillance system. The News section won an award for its powerful coverage of Israel and Gaza. <em>The National</em>'s graphics team won an award for their Fifa World Cup poster and another for their Big Picture on the number of gun deaths in the US after the Las Vegas shooting. Ultratravel picked up an award for the best newspaper supplement. The other awards were in the movies and animation category, where the “Fascinating facts about Louvre Abu Dhabi” and the “Super Bowl of camel pageantry” won prizes. The competition is open to newspapers from all over the world, with 182 publications from 25 countries entering work. The 16 judges were from eight countries and included some of the most influential newspaper designers in Europe.
