ABU DHABI // The familiar old blue, red, grey and green car licence plates will soon disappear, said Lt Col Suhail al Khaili, director of the car licensing section at Abu Dhabi Police.
"In a few months, the old number plate designs will be replaced by the new design as people go to renew their car registration," Lt. Col Suhail said. "We have so many designs and colours, like a rainbow, we need to unify it all.
"The new designs are more practical because they ... [will not] run out as fast, and are better for security reasons because the numbers are clearer to read."
The red plates will be replaced with category "4", the blue plates with category "7", the grey plates with category "8" and green plates with category "9".
The existing "5", "6" and "10" categories have run out of numbers, and so a new plate category, 11, will be released.
There are 100,000 number plates in each category. Of these, 25,000 are auctioned off, and the other 75,000 are simply released for the public.
Police will soon announce online and live auctions for the new category. Proceeds go to victims of road accidents and the handicapped.
The change will take two years in all. "Ninety-five per cent of the replacements should be done in a year. The other five per cent are private cars that have a two-year registration," Lt. Col Suhail said.

Checks continue
A High Court judge issued an interim order on Friday suspending a decision by Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots to direct a stop to Brexit agri-food checks at Northern Ireland ports.
Mr Justice Colton said he was making the temporary direction until a judicial review of the minister's unilateral action this week to order a halt to port checks that are required under the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Civil servants have yet to implement the instruction, pending legal clarity on their obligations, and checks are continuing.

Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win.
