Road works to improve traffic around Al Khawaneej will soon be under way after Dubai's Roads and Traffic Authority awarded the Dh500 million construction contract on Saturday. Al Khawaneej Corridor Project will include improvements to Al Khawaneej Street and Al Amardi Street, replacing Al Khawaneej roundabout with an underpass, and construction on Mushrif Park. The project covers the construction of three main junctions and service roads extending 23 kilometres. It will link Al Awir and Al Khawaneej areas and improve accessibility to Airport Street. Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the RTA, said the project was designed with current and projected traffic growth in mind. "It will enhance the link between Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan and Emirates Roads, and cut the delay to just 45 seconds in this sector," he said. "It will also improve the traffic flow on Al Khawaneej and Al Amardi Roads, and reduce the delay time in the area from two minutes to one.” Three lanes in each direction will be added on Al Khawaneej Street, along with traffic lights to replace the roundabout. The intersection of Al Amardi Street and Emirates Road will be improved with a new two-lane flyover in each direction crossing over Emirates Road in the direction of Al Awir. A footbridge will also be built on Al Khawaneej Street, near Arabian Centre to serve pedestrians.
