Around 148 people were killed in road accidents in Dubai last year, according to traffic police.
Police said the fatal accidents were predominantly caused by misjudgments by drivers who failed to leave a safe distance between vehicles, as well as speeding.
Despite the large number of road deaths, Dubai traffic police said the figure had decreased from the year before, 2016, when 195 people died.
A total of 166 people died in 2015, according to figures released on Tuesday.
Several initiatives to lower speed limits and carry out awareness campaigns have been rolled out to reduce road fatalities.
Mr Abdul Rahman Al Bastaki, an official from the Roads and Transports Authority, said road fatality indicators have decreased in recent years. “We got down to 3.2 deaths per 100,000 people in Dubai in 2017,” he said.

Mr Al Bastaki said a total of 119 pedestrian bridges have been installed on Dubai’s roads.
“Currently, there are 119 pedestrian bridges in the emirate and we aim to install 169 by 2022/2023."
Mr Al Bastaki was speaking during an interactive session on road safety and harnessing technology to reduce traffic accidents.
