Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi announced new awareness campaigns to improve road safety around schools yesterday.
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said a two-month safety campaign will begin in schools next month as part of an initiative of the traffic wing, and a three-month "Schools Without Accidents" awareness campaign has been launched by Abu Dhabi Police.
In 2008, 113 schoolchildren under the age of seven died in traffic accidents in the capital, compared with 94 last year, according to Brig Gen Gaith Hassan al Zaabi, director general of traffic coordination at Abu Dhabi Police.
"There is a pressing need to spread awareness among students of all ages and their parents," he said.
The Abu Dhabi Police's efforts will involve distributing flyers on road safety and an online awareness campaign. In Dubai, road safety booklets and educational materials will be distributed to students, and lectures will be held for school bus drivers as part of the programme.
Nabeel Mohammed Salih, the acting director of the traffic department at the RTA, said the safety guide would highlight the need to be watchful of traffic when alighting from school buses and crossing the road, as well as procedures to be followed in case of an accident.

Baked goods - Most cakes, cookies, pie crusts and crackers contain shortening, which is usually made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Ready-made frosting is another source of trans fat.
