Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, reviewed construction work for the Expo 2020 metro station on Monday. The gold-rimmed wings of the station’s canopy resemble the wings of a plane and are meant to reflect the emirate’s push towards innovation. The station will serve as the final stop on the new route extending the Dubai Metro red line by 15km to the site of Expo 2020. Five elevated and two underground stations are part of the seven stations in the scheme. The expo station, with its distinctive design, is a key terminal that will handle millions of visitors. Sheikh Mohammed watched a video explaining that the Expo Station will be able to handle 522,000 passengers each day in both directions. There will be two platforms and three routes linked to the expo. The project also includes an interchange station linking Route 2020 and the Red Line of Dubai Metro at Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station. Sheikh Mohammed said the Dubai Government had allocated 21 per cent of its budget for new projects and programmes to improve existing infrastructure as the city readies to host the world fair for the first time in the region. The government allocated Dh5 billion from its 2018 budget to projects related to Expo 2020. The first of the new metro trains to be used on the expo route will arrive in Dubai next month and will begin operation in December, according to Dubai Media Office. Carriages will be tested in May next year and trial runs of trains in February 2020 will check the control systems. Test runs will continue until the project is officially opened in October 2020. Sheikh Mohammed was accompanied Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, on the visit. Mattar Al Tayer, the director general and chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority board of executive directors said all bridge works related to the expo project would be completed in November. While viaduct construction was about 83 per cent complete, the work on the stations has reached the half-way stage. _______________ Read more: Drilling completed in key Dubai Metro tunnel for Expo 2020 Dubai Metro extension for Expo 2020 to begin this year Four medical centres to be built for Expo 2020 Dubai
