The speed limit will be slashed on a key Fujairah route from next week in a bid to boost road safety. Police in the emirate have announced that the speed limit will be cut from 140kph to 120kph on Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road, a key transport link in the emirate, from Monday, July 1. The advertised speed limit on the road, set at 100kph, will remain unchanged. But the speed buffer in place - which currently allows drivers to travel up to 40kph above the legal limit before facing fines - will be reduced to 20kph. Police said speed cameras will be modified on the 40km stretch, from the Yabsa roundabout to the Thoban area. The road is a popular route for commuters travelling to Dubai and Abu Dhabi through the emirate. “Many residential areas are now located along the road, therefore, the radars speed limits had to be reduced for road safety,” said Colonel Saleh Al Dhanhani, deputy director of traffic at Fujairah Police. Last August, the buffer that allows drivers to travel up to 20kph above the advertised speed limit on UAE roads was removed in Abu Dhabi to improve road safety. In October 2017, the speed limits on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road through the Dubai section were cut from 120kph to 110kph in a bid to reduce the numer of accidents on the routes.
