A UAE charity is helping Yemeni fishermen rebuild their trade after much infrastructure was destroyed by Houthi militias.
The ‘Fishermen Support Project’ was launched by Emirates Red Crescent on Monday and will serve Yemenis living along the Red Sea coast. The drive involves handing out equipment and tools to more than 1,000 fishermen, rebuilding fish markets and establishing administrative offices powered by a solar energy system.
Fish storage areas, where catch will be processed, will be renovated in a bid to resume the industry that was a primary source of income for many residents of the area.
The project launched in Al Qotaba area in Khokha District, south of Hodeidah, in the presence of Saeed Al Kaabi, UAE Humanitarian Operations Director for Yemen; Dr Al Hassan Taher, Governor of Hodeidah; Mohammed Abdul Salam, Director-General of Khokha District, and a number of Yemeni officials and fishermen.
Mr Al Kaabi said the project came under the directives of the UAE’s leadership and is among a host of developmental and service projects with a budget of Dh107.1 million that were recently announced.
