DUBAI // The UAE has pledged more than US$7.1 million (Dh26.4m) to assist the United Nations development programmes and initiatives for the next year.
Of this, a whopping $5m will be given to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women.
Ambassador Ahmed Al-Jarman, the Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, on Tuesday announced the country's budget at the UN Pledging Conference for Development Activities 2011, according to Wam, the state news agency.
Addressing the conference, he said the UAE was keen to strengthen "the work of these international agencies, funds and programmes".
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East is the second-highest beneficiary, receiving $1m.
Mr Al-Jarman said he hoped other states and international donors would increase their contributions "to these important funds and programmes in order to enable their governing bodies to meet the growing challenges resulting from the critical economic and financial crises facing our world".
Twenty member states pledged approximately $265m for the United Nations development activities for 2012.
Navid Hanif, the Acting Director of the Office of Economic and Social Council Support and Coordination in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, told donors the current economic situation "should not be an excuse to renege on aid commitments".

Juvenile arthritis
Along with doctors, families and teachers can help pick up cases of arthritis in children.
Most types of childhood arthritis are known as juvenile idiopathic arthritis. JIA causes pain and inflammation in one or more joints for at least six weeks.
Dr Betina Rogalski said "The younger the child the more difficult it into pick up the symptoms. If the child is small, it may just be a bit grumpy or pull its leg a way or not feel like walking,” she said.
According to The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases in US, the most common symptoms of juvenile arthritis are joint swelling, pain, and stiffness that doesn’t go away. Usually it affects the knees, hands, and feet, and it’s worse in the morning or after a nap.
Limping in the morning because of a stiff knee, excessive clumsiness, having a high fever and skin rash are other symptoms. Children may also have swelling in lymph nodes in the neck and other parts of the body.
Arthritis in children can cause eye inflammation and growth problems and can cause bones and joints to grow unevenly.
In the UK, about 15,000 children and young people are affected by arthritis.

Gertrude Bell's life in focus
A feature film
At one point, two feature films were in the works, but only German director Werner Herzog’s project starring Nicole Kidman would be made. While there were high hopes he would do a worthy job of directing the biopic, when Queen of the Desert arrived in 2015 it was a disappointment. Critics panned the film, in which Herzog largely glossed over Bell’s political work in favour of her ill-fated romances.
A documentary
A project that did do justice to Bell arrived the next year: Sabine Krayenbuhl and Zeva Oelbaum’s Letters from Baghdad: The Extraordinary Life and Times of Gertrude Bell. Drawing on more than 1,000 pieces of archival footage, 1,700 documents and 1,600 letters, the filmmakers painstakingly pieced together a compelling narrative that managed to convey both the depth of Bell’s experience and her tortured love life.
Books, letters and archives
Two biographies have been written about Bell, and both are worth reading: Georgina Howell’s 2006 book Queen of the Desert and Janet Wallach’s 1996 effort Desert Queen. Bell published several books documenting her travels and there are also several volumes of her letters, although they are hard to find in print. Original documents are housed at the Gertrude Bell Archive at the University of Newcastle, which has an online catalogue.
