ABU DHABI // The British foreign office is to appoint a new UK ambassador to the UAE.
In July, Philip Parham will succeed Dominic Jermey, who will move to another diplomatic service appointment after the set four-year term in the UAE.
Mr Parham joined the foreign office in 1993 and has served as British High Commissioner to Tanzania and as ambassador and deputy permanent representative to the United Nations in New York.
He has also been posted in Washington and Riyadh, and has worked within the office on several areas including counter-terrorism and South Asia.
The new ambassador also worked for 10 years in the private sector before joining the British government, including six years in Japan.
He said: “I am delighted to be appointed as British ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. It will be a great privilege to represent the United Kingdom in a country with whom our security, commercial and cultural partnerships are historic, wide-ranging, strategic, crucial and growing.”
Outgoing ambassador Jermey said: “It is an honour to serve as Her Majesty’s ambassador to the UAE. The friendship between our two countries is long and deep, constantly changing and always rewarding.
“As ambassador during an intense period of partnership across a whole spectrum of bilateral interests, I have been lucky enough to have been given a key part in bringing our countries even closer.
“When I leave this role later in the year, I look forward to continuing to support this relationship, and to support Philip as the new British ambassador in the future. We have done so much together, and there is so much more we can still achieve.”

The more serious side of specialty coffee
While the taste of beans and freshness of roast is paramount to the specialty coffee scene, so is sustainability and workers’ rights.
The bulk of genuine specialty coffee companies aim to improve on these elements in every stage of production via direct relationships with farmers. For instance, Mokha 1450 on Al Wasl Road strives to work predominantly with women-owned and -operated coffee organisations, including female farmers in the Sabree mountains of Yemen.
Because, as the boutique’s owner, Garfield Kerr, points out: “women represent over 90 per cent of the coffee value chain, but are woefully underrepresented in less than 10 per cent of ownership and management throughout the global coffee industry.”
One of the UAE’s largest suppliers of green (meaning not-yet-roasted) beans, Raw Coffee, is a founding member of the Partnership of Gender Equity, which aims to empower female coffee farmers and harvesters.
Also, globally, many companies have found the perfect way to recycle old coffee grounds: they create the perfect fertile soil in which to grow mushrooms.
