World Cup soccer star arrested in Dubai

DUBAI // The former Australian international football captain has been arrested in Dubai. Craig Moore, 34, was involved in a drunken altercation with police, according to reports in The Herald Sun in Melbourne. An Australian embassy official told The National that it was providing consular assistance to a 34-year-old man from Queensland who was arrested in Dubai on Wednesday.

"The man remains in detention, and has legal representation," she said. "Consular officials from the Australian Embassy in Abu Dhabi spoke to the man via telephone today. He confirmed his welfare." Dubai Police were unwilling to confirm whether they had detained Mr Moore. "Consular staff will visit the man at the earliest opportunity," the embassy official said. "Officials are providing consular assistance to the man's wife in Australia and are in contact with the man's lawyer."

Mr Moore, a central defender, retired from football after the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa. He spent most of his professional career with the Scottish club Rangers, apart from two seasons in England with Newcastle United of the Premier League. He played 52 times for the Australian national side, known as the Socceroos, including the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. Mr Moore is likely to appear in court on Sunday.
