One person has died and 10 others have been injured after a man attacked students and staff at a vocational college located within a shopping centre in eastern Finland, Finnish police have confirmed. In a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon, police said they had arrested a suspect, who is a Finnish national and a student of the college. The attacker, who was among the injured, was carrying a sword-shaped weapon and a firearm, officers said. The motive for the attack was not clear. Officers called to the scene opened fire during the incident but did not confirm whether the attacker had been shot. The incident took place at the Savo vocational school, which is situated in the Herman shopping centre in the town of Kuopio. The college wrote on its website: "We have just had a serious incident at our Herman office in Kuopio. The authorities and Savo Vocational College will inform when more information is available.” Finland's Prime Minister Antti Rinne described the violence as "shocking and unacceptable", adding that he was monitoring the situation closely. Finland has witnessed two deadly school attacks in recent years. In 2007, a student at Jokela High School in the south of the country shot eight people dead before turning the gun on himself. One year later a student at a vocational college in Kauhajoki, western Finland, shot dead 10 people before killing himself.
