A teenager was killed in a machete attack after being chased down one of London’s busiest shopping streets. Jeremy Menesses, 17, was chased down Oxford Street and killed shortly after 5.30pm on Saturday, when the area was busy with shoppers. He was taken to a central London hospital but was pronounced dead less than two hours later. The attack followed a fight between a large group, police said. Three men, all aged 18, were arrested on suspicion of murder after they turned up at hospital with minor stab wounds. Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin, of London’s Metropolitan police, said: “This attack took place following a fight between a number of males in broad daylight and was witnessed by a large number of horrified onlookers.” Last year, 149 people were murdered in London, a 10-year high. The toll is significantly lower so far this year compared with the same period in 2019, but includes a period of lockdown in which fewer crimes were recorded.
