Women proposed for Iran cabinet

The Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said today he plans to appoint at least two women ministers to his new cabinet, a first in the Islamic republic. He said in a live television interview he would propose Fatemeh Ajorlou for the welfare and social security ministry and Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi for the health ministry. "There will be some more young people and other women in the cabinet," Mr Ahmadinejad said. He said he would submit his line-up to parliament on Wednesday.

Mr Ahmadinejad was sworn in on August 5 for a second four-year term after massive opposition to his June election victory sparked the worst crisis in the 30-year history of the Islamic republic. Lawmakers have warned him that his ministers must be "experienced" and urged him to co-operate if his line-up is to be approved during a confidence vote in parliament. Mr Ahmadinejad was criticised during his first tenure for frequently reshuffling the cabinet, sacking 10 ministers and two central bank chiefs and retaining inexperienced ministers.
