Russia knife attack: Seven wounded in Surgut

Seven people have been wounded after a man launched a knife attack on passers-by in the city of Surgut in Northern Russia, according to police. Russia's Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said armed police had “liquidated” the attacker at the scene. It is unclear what the motive for the incident was and whether it was connected to terror. “The version that the attack was a terrorist one is not the main one,” Russia’s interior ministry told Interax news agency. Authorities say they are considering “possible psychiatric disorders” of the suspect, who was a local resident born in 1994. Footage posted to Russia’s Ren TV television show a black-clad man lying on a pavement while a policeman kneels on his back. Police said that officers had fired warning shots at the scene before firing at the attacker. Initial reports that said that eight people had been wounded have been lowered to seven, with two people confirmed to be in a serious condition. The other five are stable. The city of Surgut lies 2,100 kilometres (1,330 miles) northeast of Moscow.
