BOSTON // Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the men accused of carrying out the bombing at the Boston Marathon last month, has been buried, police said yesterday. It followed a week-long search for somewhere willing to take the body.
"As a result of our public appeal for help, a courageous and compassionate individual came forward to provide the assistance needed to properly bury the deceased," said police in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Sgt Kerry Hazelhurst said the body was no longer in Worcester and had been buried at an undisclosed location.
Tsarnaev and his bother Dzhokhar, ethnic Chechens from southern Russia who lived in Massachusetts, are accused of planting two shrapnel-packed, pressure-cooker bombs near the finish line of the marathon, killing three people and injuring about 260.
Dzhokhar, who was captured while hiding in a boat in the garden of a house in a Boston suburb, has been charged over the bombing. Tamerlan was killed during a gun battle with police while the brothers tried to flee.
On Wednesday, police in Worcester, west of Boston, had pleaded for a resolution of the burial row, saying they were spending tens of thousands of dollars to protect the funeral home where his body was being kept amid protests.
"We are not barbarians," police chief Gary Gemme said. "We bury the dead."
