US President Donald Trump issued a warning to international businesses over Iran on Tuesday, saying that anyone working with Tehran would be barred from trading with the United States. Just hours after the US reimposed sanctions on Iran, Mr Trump tweeted "anyone doing business with Iran will not be doing business with the United States". The president said the measures that took effect on Monday night were the most "biting sanctions ever imposed", and warned of the further sanctions due to come into force on November 4 that will target sensitive energy and shipping sectors. The tweet comes as sanctions suspended under the nuclear deal in 2015 were reimposed at midnight Washington time, barring transactions with Iran in currency, some metals, food and carpets. In an executive order, Mr Trump reintroduced financial sanctions on Iran and informed Congress of the changes. "Consistent with President Trump’s decision, the administration will be reimposing specified sanctions after August 6, the final day of the 90-day wind-down period,” the White House said. Mr Trump's tweet places pressure on European countries struggling to withdraw business connections established after the 2015 deal. European Union countries are still signed to the deal and have not reimposed sanctions. The EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini said that the EU would pass a "blocking statute" on Tuesday to nullify US legal action against European companies in connection with Iran. "The European Union's updated Blocking Statute enters into force on 7 August to protect EU companies doing legitimate business with Iran from the impact of US extra-territorial sanctions," said a joint statement by Ms Mogherini and the foreign ministers of France, Germany and Britain. German car manufacturer Daimler said it was halting business activities in Iran after the US reimposed sanctions. "We have suspended our already limited activities in Iran in accordance with the applicable sanctions," a spokeswoman said. Daimler was closely monitoring political developments, she said. _______________ Read more: Donald Trump reimposes sanctions on Iran but is ready to meet Hassan Rouhani Iran confirms holding war drills in Gulf Iran preparing currency rescue plans as US sanctions return Explainer: the collapse of the Iranian rial _______________ Mr Trump also renewed his offer to meet his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani.
