Messages of condolences poured in on Tuesday from police departments throughout the US in a show of support for their colleagues in Lexington after a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts truck caught fire, reportedly destroying all of the sweet treats inside the vehicle. Heartbroken officers posted a tweet from the scene, where the three men were pictured with their heads in their hands, mourning every policeman's staple sweet. The caption read: No words, followed by a teary emoji. Over the decades, the image of the doughnut-eating American police officer has permeated popular culture through US films and Hollywood. And while the overuse of it has turned it into a cliche, their love of the round snack is rooted in reality. Within hours police officers had replied to the tweet with words of encouragement, including "my thoughts are with the @lexkypolice officers in this time of tagedy", "Condolences from Chicago" from the city's 14th District and "We are so deeply sorry for your loss. Your brothers and sisters in Massachusetts are here for you during these tough times". The driver said he noticed the smoke coming out from the back as he was driving through Lexington, Kentucky. The fire crew was able to put it out and no one was hurt, apart from the doughnuts and three devastated policemen.
