Open call for artists to have their work displayed in lights on the Burj Khalifa

Are you a designer or artist that would love to see your own work on the largest display screen in the world? Well, Emaar has just put out an open call for works to be submitted for its record-breaking LED light show that is projected onto the Burj Khalifa.

Submissions are open until February 28, and 10 winning designs will be splashed across 109,252 square metres of the Burj Khalifa (the Light Up 2018 show beat Hong Kong's Guinness World Record for the largest light and sound show on a single structure).

The open call was announced on Instagram today, and more details of submission guidelines can be found on the Burj Khalifa website. Individuals or groups, both in the UAE or internationally, are invited to submit their light or 3D mapping designs.

The guidelines suggest designers think about how the work will be viewed at a distance of around 100 metres (so larger video details or animations are recommended), and submissions shouldn't be longer than five minutes of video content in MOV format. There are downloadable files to help artists with their submissions on the Burj Khalifa website.

When the winning works will begin to be displayed, we don't yet know. The Light Up 2018 show is due to run until March 31, and so the open call perhaps suggests that the LED light show will continue on in another form after this date (unless the February 28 submissions are turned around very quickly and incorporated into the current show). We will keep you updated.

WHERE SHOULD YOU WATCH THE CURRENT LIGHT SHOW?

Keen to see Light Up 2018? The show starts at 8pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday and at 10pm on Thursday and Friday, and is best seen from near the Dubai Fountain, or at Souk Al Bahar or Burj Park. It's good to watch it from a slightly further away vantage point, rather than standing directly underneath the tower, so that you can get a full view of the whole show. And remember, the Dubai Fountain has a show that is coordinated with the LED display.

UAE currency: the story behind the money in your pockets
What is 'Soft Power'?

Soft power was first mentioned in 1990 by former US Defence Secretary Joseph Nye.
He believed that there were alternative ways of cultivating support from other countries, instead of achieving goals using military strength.
Soft power is, at its root, the ability to convince other states to do what you want without force.
This is traditionally achieved by proving that you share morals and values.
