Construction work on the new Umm Al Quwain National Museum has started, the Department of Tourism and Archeology in Umm Al Quwain has announced.

The emirate's new national museum, which will be located in old Umm Al Quwain and built on an area of 8,000 square metres, is scheduled for completion by June 2022.

The news was confirmed by Sheikh Majid bin Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla, chairman of the emirate's tourism department, who told the Emirates News Agency Wam that, once completed, the museum will allow visitors to learn about the history of the emirate.

The museum will display some of the most prominent artefacts and historical findings from the emirate in one space.

Al Mualla also said that it will be an academic centre showcasing knowledge on human heritage, as well as a tourist attraction that will contribute to the economy of Umm Al Quwain.

Visitors can also expect to find an exhibition space for artefacts and artworks, in addition to an outdoor theatre, an archaeology lab, entertainment facilities and a gift shop.

Umm Al Quwain is home to Ed-Dur, one of the largest archaeological sites in the UAE, where artefacts dating back to 2,000 years have been found.

The emirate also has a number of historical landmarks that have been turned into museums, including Al Ali Fort museum and the Falaj Al Mualla museum.

Al Ali Fort was a government centre and a police station before it was restored and reopened to the public in 2000.

Falaj Al Mualla, a fort with three watchtowers, was also renovated and reopened as a museum in the last decade.
