Emmy Awards 2021 winners list
TV comedy Ted Lasso and the drama The Crown were big winners at the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday for the heart-warming tale of a struggling English soccer team and the lavish saga of the British royal family.
Ted Lasso won Outstanding Comedy Series while The Crown took home the award for Outstanding Drama Series. Chess drama The Queen's Gambit was honoured as best limited series.
The Crown also swept all four dramatic acting categories including Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series for Josh O'Connor and Olivia Colman, as well as wins for supporting actors Gillian Anderson (as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher) and Tobias Menzies (the late Prince Philip). The show also won Emmys for writing and directing.
Colman, who bested a crowded field that also included her co-star Emma Corrin, described the win as "a lovely end to the most extraordinary journey with this lovely family."
"We're all thrilled. I am very proud. I'm very grateful. We're going to party," said Peter Morgan, creator of The Crown, at a gathering in London for the cast and crew.
Jason Sudeikis, the star and co-creator of Ted Lasso, was named best comedy actor and the show also brought statuettes for Britons Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein for their supporting roles as the club owner and ageing star player.
"This show is about family. This show's about mentors and teachers and this show's about teammates. And I wouldn't be here without those three things in my life," Sudeikis said on accepting the award.
Comedy writing and directing awards went to Hacks, about a fading stand-up female comedian played by Jean Smart, who got a standing ovation when she was named best comedy actress.
A best drama series win for The Crown marks a milestone for Netflix, while Apple TV+ enters streaming's big league with a comedy series win for Ted Lasso.
Last year's ceremony, held before coronavirus vaccines were available, was an entirely remote affair, with comedian Jimmy Kimmel standing in a deserted downtown Los Angeles auditorium as winners beamed in by video.
This time, comedian Cedric the Entertainer takes on hosting duties, with a guest list of 500-odd nominees gathering under strict pandemic precautions including proof of inoculation.
Many A-list stars are expected to appear, but others such as Friends: The Reunion nominee Jennifer Aniston have decided to stay away for health reasons.

Who was Alfred Nobel?
The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.
- In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
