Captain Sir Tom Moore has died aged 100. The Second World War veteran, who found a place in the hearts of the British public after raising millions of pounds for health service workers, was hospitalised with Covid-19 this week, but died on Tuesday.
To announce his death, his family simply tweeted: "Captain Sir Tom Moore 1920-2021."

Following on from the tributes paid by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and a number of politicians, Britain's celebrities have also been remembering "a truly remarkable man" on social media.

Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan wrote: "A magnificent man. A national hero. In our darkest hour since WW2, he rallied."
Morgan has also announced that the Wednesday episode of Good Morning Britain "is dedicated to Captain Sir Tom Moore. The man who put the great into Great Britain and reminded us all of the power of courage, resilience, positivity, determination and a will to succeed against all the odds".

The Hunger Games actor Sam Claflin paid tribute to "an incredible man", writing: "An inspiration to us all, in some of the darkest of days. Thank you for paving the way kind sir. You will be missed."

British TV presenters Ant and Dec tweeted: "Captain Sir Tom Moore. What a hero. You were a shining beacon of hope and an inspiration to us all when we needed it most. We thank you and salute you. Rest in peace Sir."
Countdown lexicographer Susie Dent used her way with words to help people mourning the beloved veteran describe their emotions, summing them up as "sorrow-struck".

TV and radio presenter Amanda Holden said: "Goodbye to this absolute joy of a man," describing him as "a national hero who brought us all together and shone so much light in such a dark time".
