Muslim fasters wait for the sunset to break their fast during the Islamic Holy month of Ramadan, outside Al Farooq Mosque in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 14 April 2022 (issued 15 April 2022). Muslims around the world celebrate the holy month of Ramadan this year amid an increase in the price for foodstuffs, affected by the post-pandemic inflation and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While charity activities during the month usually focus on giving money or food to underprivileged people, it became more important to organize public banquets to offer free fast-breaking meals. Fasting Muslims consume two main meals, Iftar at sunset when they break their fast, and Suhoor consumed early in the morning before the day starts. Several countries across the region keep the tradition that goes back to the Ottoman era of Mesaharati, the person who walks around the streets beating a drum calling on people to wake up for the Suhoor. Egypt keeps the tradition of firing 'Ramadan cannon', twice every day at sunrise and sunset to mark the beginning and end of the daily fast. There are different types of food served during Ramadan, however Muslims usually break their fast by eating dates, a practice used to be followed by Prophet Muhammad, and a variety of sweets are prepared and consumed during this holy Month to satisfy the post Iftar sugar cravings.
