Adam Driver, a star on HBO's groundbreaking ensemble Girls, and the brilliant Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher deservedly won the best actor and best actress prizes at the Venice Film Festival for this excellent adaptation of Marco Franzoso's novel. The action has been moved from the Italian university town of Padua to New York City. The opening scene is an acting masterclass, a one-shot take of the couple meeting in the toilet in the basement of a Chinese restaurant that lasts more than eight minutes. It is funny, touching and heartwarming in the manner of the best screwball comedies. It's not long before the couple tie the knot, with Driver serenading his wife in Italian, but when she gets pregnant things start to go wrong, very wrong. Director Saverio Costanzo completely changes the tone from rom-com to psychological and physical horror. Comparable in tone and feel to Roman Polanski's classic Rosemary's Baby, this is the most unique, surprising horror film of the year - offering a particular scare to vegetarians. *Kaleem Aftab
