Jeb Bush to guest on Colbert Late Show debut

Republican presidential contender Jeb Bush will be an opening-night guest on Stephen Colbert's first edition of The Late Show, on September 8. The former Colbert Report host wrote on Twitter: "My first GOP candidate!" Poking fun at the size of the Republican contenders, he added: "Luckily I do 200 shows a year, so I think I can fit them all." Bush responded in light-hearted kind, tweeting: "Only if you have at least two of us on each show." Colbert takes over the CBS show following the retirement of David Letterman. George Clooney has already been announced as an opening-night guest. – AP

Twin Peaks revival to start filming next month

Twin Peaks is moving ahead with original co-creator David Lynch back on board, and filming will begin next month, according to TV network Showtime. Lynch had said in April that he was leaving the project, but Showtime says he and co-creator Mark Frost are writing the new series, and Lynch will direct all the episodes. Showtime Networks president David Nevins said: "I never had any doubt we would bring him back." Lynch had complained that the series needed more than the originally planned nine episodes to tell its story – and Nevins confirmed that there now will be more than nine, without giving an exact number. No airdate was given, though it is expected to premiere next year, and no casting details were revealed, although many of the original stars, including Kyle MacLachlan, who played the lead character, FBI special agent Dale Cooper, are due to return. – AP

Empire star Howard in trouble for taking photos in court

A Los Angeles judge admonished actor Terrence Howard for taking photos of reporters during a court hearing on his divorce settlement. Howard snapped a photo of the audience, which included journalists covering the hearing, on Tuesday. The Oscar-nominated actor and star of TV hit Empire is trying to overturn a settlement agreement with his ex-wife. No photography is allowed in Los Angeles courthouses without a court order. Howard told reporters before a break in the hearing that they were always prying into his business but didn't want scrutiny themselves. After the break, Los Angeles superior court judge Thomas Trent Lewis admonished Howard and briefly confiscated his mobile phone so that a deputy could verify the photos had been deleted. He told Howard he could hold a contempt hearing for the violation but did not set one. Howard said it wouldn't happen again. –AP

She will appear in the fifth episode of the second season, which premieres on October 12 in th US. – AP

Cancelled Constantine revived for guest role on Arrow

NBC's supernatural drama Constantine, based on the DC Comics character John Constantine, was axed during its first season, but the anti-hero is being resurrected. Star Matt Ryan will reprise the role of the demon hunter in an upcoming episode of the CW network's superhero drama Arrow, which is based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow. The CW said Constantine will "provide critical support to Oliver when arrows aren't enough". Arrow returns for its fourth season on October 7 in the US. Spin-off The Flash will return on October 6, while a second spin-off, Legends of Tomorrow, is due to begin in January. – AP

Deadliest Catch captain had heart attack before motorcycle crash

Preliminary autopsy results say a ship captain who appeared on the Discovery Channel television programme Deadliest Catch suffered a heart attack before he died in Sturgis, South Dakota, during its famous motorcycle rally. Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin says an autopsy was completed on Monday and he is waiting for a toxicology report for 50-year-old Tony Lara, a native of Alaska, but doesn't expect the results will show anything that might have contributed to Lara's death. Lara died on Saturday morning at a private residence in Sturgis. He appeared on Deadliest Catch at the helm of a boat called the Cornelia Marie. – AP

Normcore explained

Something of a fashion anomaly, normcore is essentially a celebration of the unremarkable. The term was first popularised by an article in New York magazine in 2014 and has been dubbed “ugly”, “bland’ and "anti-style" by fashion writers. It’s hallmarks are comfort, a lack of pretentiousness and neutrality – it is a trend for those who would rather not stand out from the crowd. For the most part, the style is unisex, favouring loose silhouettes, thrift-shop threads, baseball caps and boyish trainers. It is important to note that normcore is not synonymous with cheapness or low quality; there are high-fashion brands, including Parisian label Vetements, that specialise in this style. Embraced by fashion-forward street-style stars around the globe, it’s uptake in the UAE has been relatively slow.

Who has lived at The Bishops Avenue?
  • George Sainsbury of the supermarket dynasty, sugar magnate William Park Lyle and actress Dame Gracie Fields were residents in the 1930s when the street was only known as ‘Millionaires’ Row’.
  • Then came the international super rich, including the last king of Greece, Constantine II, the Sultan of Brunei and Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal who was at one point ranked the third richest person in the world.
  • Turkish tycoon Halis Torprak sold his mansion for £50m in 2008 after spending just two days there. The House of Saud sold 10 properties on the road in 2013 for almost £80m.
  • Other residents have included Iraqi businessman Nemir Kirdar, singer Ariana Grande, holiday camp impresario Sir Billy Butlin, businessman Asil Nadir, Paul McCartney’s former wife Heather Mills.
Hunting park to luxury living
  • Land was originally the Bishop of London's hunting park, hence the name
  • The road was laid out in the mid 19th Century, meandering through woodland and farmland
  • Its earliest houses at the turn of the 20th Century were substantial detached properties with extensive grounds

The burning issue

The internal combustion engine is facing a watershed moment – major manufacturer Volvo is to stop producing petroleum-powered vehicles by 2021 and countries in Europe, including the UK, have vowed to ban their sale before 2040. The National takes a look at the story of one of the most successful technologies of the last 100 years and how it has impacted life in the UAE.

Fireball

Moscow claimed it hit the largest military fuel storage facility in Ukraine, triggering a huge fireball at the site.

A plume of black smoke rose from a fuel storage facility in the village of Kalynivka outside Kyiv on Friday after Russia said it had destroyed the military site with Kalibr cruise missiles.

"On the evening of March 24, Kalibr high-precision sea-based cruise missiles attacked a fuel base in the village of Kalynivka near Kyiv," the Russian defence ministry said in a statement.

Ukraine confirmed the strike, saying the village some 40 kilometres south-west of Kyiv was targeted.

Teachers' pay - what you need to know

Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:

- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools

- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say

- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance

- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs

- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills

- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month

- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues
