It won’t be long before we’re given word that the first phase of the upgrade to Dubai’s Shindagha Heritage District is complete.

When it is, it will become the world’s largest open-air museum, boasting more than 150 buildings including floating pearl and trade exhibits. The reinvigorated precinct is expected to attract as many as 12 million visitors a year, which is good news for the emirate.

This image shows the Shindagha District from the other side of the Creek in 1977, when most of the trading was undertaken by boat.

The area, close to the Dubai Creek, is where the ruling family originally called home.

While Dubai has spread and grown up around the area, many of the traditions of early traders remain, and the Heritage District will serve to reconnect the region to its past.
