Trouble with the Curve
Director: Robert Lorenz
Starring: Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman
*** Clint Eastwood has always been about less-is-more - and not just his acting style. Since 1992, he's played just 10 characters - with all but In the Line of Fire directed by himself. Now, aged 82, he throws us a curve ball, with this gentle story about an ageing baseball scout. Directed by Eastwood's long-time producer-cum-assistant director Lorenz, Eastwood effectively reprises the grizzly, grumpy grouch he played in 2008's Gran Torino - a man who feels out of step with the modern world, full of aches and pains. The effervescent Adams co-stars as his estranged lawyer-daughter, trying to bond with her frustrating, stuck-in-his-ways father on a work trip. Lorenz maybe takes too many swings - sports story, family saga and romance (as Timberlake's ex-player takes a shine to Adams). But Eastwood will still make your day.
