It may be the so-called quiet season here in the UAE, as families look for indoor fun with temperatures sweltering, but there is still plenty on the cards to keep residents and visitors busy this week. While a unique meditation experience is taking place in Dubai, Louvre Abu Dhabi is inviting people to take part in its newly launched treasure hunt.

Here, The National rounds up seven things to do around the Emirates from Monday to Sunday.

Monday, July 29

Popular chain Wingstop is offering classic chicken wings free of charge this Monday. Head to any of its branches (with the exception of IMG Worlds of Adventure) and order either an eight-piece combo or a 10-piece platter to avail of the offer. Flavour options include mango habanero, Louisiana rub and the all-new sweet and spicy soy. The offer is valid for dine-in guests only.

Indulge in a mid-week pause at Dubai's Theatre of Digital Arts. The Souk Madinat venue is turning to mindfulness with a unique take on meditation. Dubbed 9D meditation, the session features multi-dimensional healing exercises enabled by technology. A 360 set-up will utilise neuro-sounds (sounds and frequencies thought to have therapeutic or healing properties due to their influence on brainwaves), breath work and visualisations, which are said to allow participants to access deep thoughts and release emotional blockages.

Meditators are encouraged to bring their own mats, as well as a hoodie and socks as body temperatures may drop during the session.

The two-hour session is facilitated by certified 9D breathwork facilitator Nassima Aboufarid, as well as well-being expert Fatima Assad and sound healer Eddy Sarkis.

Suitable for families with children aged six to 12, the game features Volpi, a friendly fox who takes participants on a mission to restore the Dome's energy by collecting 12 unique stars hidden throughout the museum's galleries. The game, available in Arabic, English and French, promotes puzzle solving and observation skills.

Day 1, Abu Dhabi Test: At a glance

Moment of the day Dimuth Karunaratne had batted with plenty of pluck, and no little skill, in getting to within seven runs of a first-day century. Then, while he ran what he thought was a comfortable single to mid-on, his batting partner Dinesh Chandimal opted to stay at home. The opener was run out by the length of the pitch.

Stat of the day – 1 One six was hit on Day 1. The boundary was only breached 18 times in total over the course of the 90 overs. When it did arrive, the lone six was a thing of beauty, as Niroshan Dickwella effortlessly clipped Mohammed Amir over the square-leg boundary.

The verdict Three wickets down at lunch, on a featherbed wicket having won the toss, and Sri Lanka’s fragile confidence must have been waning. Then Karunaratne and Chandimal's alliance of precisely 100 gave them a foothold in the match. Dickwella’s free-spirited strokeplay meant the Sri Lankans were handily placed at 227-4 at the close.

Why does a queen bee feast only on royal jelly?

Some facts about bees:

The queen bee eats only royal jelly, an extraordinary food created by worker bees so she lives much longer

The life cycle of a worker bee is from 40-60 days

A queen bee lives for 3-5 years

This allows her to lay millions of eggs and allows the continuity of the bee colony

About 20,000 honey bees and one queen populate each hive

Honey is packed with vital vitamins, minerals, enzymes, water and anti-oxidants.

Apart from honey, five other products are royal jelly, the special food bees feed their queen

Pollen is their protein source, a super food that is nutritious, rich in amino acids

Beewax is used to construct the combs. Due to its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial elements, it is used in skin treatments

Propolis, a resin-like material produced by bees is used to make hives. It has natural antibiotic qualities so works to sterilize hive,  protects from disease, keeps their home free from germs. Also used to treat sores, infection, warts

Bee venom is used by bees to protect themselves. Has anti-inflammatory properties, sometimes used to relieve conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, nerve and muscle pain

Honey, royal jelly, pollen have health enhancing qualities

The other three products are used for therapeutic purposes

Is beekeeping dangerous?

As long as you deal with bees gently, you will be safe, says Mohammed Al Najeh, who has worked with bees since he was a boy.

“The biggest mistake people make is they panic when they see a bee. They are small but smart creatures. If you move your hand quickly to hit the bees, this is an aggressive action and bees will defend themselves. They can sense the adrenalin in our body. But if we are calm, they are move away.”
