They could set you back anything between Dh1,500 and Dh1,500,000. But during the last 30 years, vintage timepieces have been transformed from the stuff of horologists' obsession into dandy must-have, the right brand and model offering an instant signifier of connoisseurship. Tariq Malik, co-owner of Dubai vintage watch specialists, Momentum, offers advice on how and what to buy.
What type of watches are collectable in the UAE right now? what's in demand?
Vintage watches are relatively new to the UAE and so the market is still developing. Most of the demand is for brands that are already well known, such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Omega. Classic models, such as the Rolex Datejust, Patek Philippe Calatrava or the Omega Speedmaster, are highly sought after. There's also particular demand for Rolexes made on special order with UAE logos printed on the dial. We've been surprised by the number of sophisticated collectors with focused interests, such as military watches, specific brands or eras. Collectors here pretty much know what they like and what they want.
Which brands best hold their value?
Given their remarkable impact on watchmaking, Rolex and Patek Philippe. They set the industry benchmark: Patek Philippe invented the keyless winding mechanism and the first wristwatch, and their creations are seen as pieces of watchmaking art that sell at auction for extremely high prices. Rolex were pioneers in so-called tool watches, made for a specific purpose. Sir Edmund Hillary reached the summit of Mount Everest wearing a Rolex Explorer, for example. Swiss brands are the most well-known and certainly the best marketed, but we do try to encourage people to consider watches made in other countries, such as Germany, France, Japan and the United States. Many have very interesting histories and traditions.
What are the essential checks you need to make when examining a potential purchase?
First, check the condition of the dial and case and whether there are deep scratches or any visible damage. Vintage watches naturally change colour with exposure to heat, sunlight and humidity, though this can add to the character and beauty of the watch if the ageing is relatively uniform. Ensure that the case has not been overpolished as this can reduce its strength and in the case of gold watches, it can reduce the value. Try to wind the watch and listen to how well the winding mechanism works. Change the time to make sure it moves smoothly. If the watch has a date function, try to change the date. Older watches do not have a quickset date function; this means you need to adjust forward the time by 24 hours for the date to change. For well-maintained watches, the date should change quickly at 12 o'clock. We would also recommend you check the movement, which is the heart of the watch. Don't hesitate to ask the shopkeeper to open it for you. For watches that are water resistant, opening the watch may not always be advisable.
What would you recommend as a first-time vintage buy?
It depends on a client's taste, their budget and the purpose of the watch. Generally, we recommend they go for a timeless steel Rolex or Omega, manual or self-winding, preferably from the 1970s or '80s. These are watches that can be worn for all occasions. The price range is reasonable and, most importantly, they provide excellent value. Rolex watches, more so than most brands in a similar price range, retain their value and are relatively easy to sell should you decide to let it go or trade-in for an upgrade. If you want to start in a higher price range, we'd recommend something like the Patek Philippe Nautilus Chronograph. Vintage Rolex sport models, such as the Submariner or GMT, which age beautifully, are another option.
What can you expect to pay for a vintage watch?
The watches we stock are priced from Dh1,500 and, at the higher end, they can reach the hundreds of thousands. We have watches from the 1930s, the vintage era, the classic era and a few contemporary style watches, as well as special and limited editions. Many brands have disappeared in the last 40 years, due to competitive pressures. Therefore, these names aren't as well-known and can now be obtained for bargain prices.
What would you recommend for the more adventurous speculator?
We don't know which watches will increase in value, so it's more important for clients to buy something they will enjoy for the long-term. The reason we focus on vintage watches is precisely because of their enduring appeal; their design and functionality have withstood the test of time. The fact that they have retained their value is simply an additional benefit.
What is the market like for vintage ladies' watches? Do the same buying rules apply?
Yes. We have a selection of ladies' watches from Cartier, Omega and Tiffany & Co, among others. Speaking to other retailers in Dubai, we are seeing a rising trend for vintage fashion - like handbags, clothing and jewellery - and a vintage watch is seen as completing this look. Also, if you're a woman looking for a unique timepiece without breaking the bank, a vintage watch is just right.
What documentation should you get with your purchase?
You should ask for a certificate providing a reference and serial number to authenticate the watch. This is important for more expensive watches. Over time, these may be lost. People might not have kept the box and original papers because they didn't realise their importance. With the original certificates, the value of a vintage watch can increase by 30 per cent. All the watches we sell come with a warranty and certificate providing details of the watch. It is very important to take proper care of a watch so your next generation will be able to enjoy it.
Is the internet a helpful resource when buying vintage or should it be avoided?
It's helpful when it comes to online forums. You can find dedicated websites for most brands and collectors are the greatest source of information. But you should buy from a trustworthy source. If you're buying online it is difficult to judge the condition of the watch without handling it. It's also difficult for online sellers to offer an after-sales service and many don't have a return policy. With auction sites, we recommend using the established houses such as Antiquorum and Christie's. They are also helpful when it comes to valuing a watch.
If you could buy any watch from any period, what would you choose and how much would it cost?
My dream watch is a vintage Pre-Daytona Rolex Chronograph (6238) with a silver dial from the mid-1960s. Those were made in small numbers and are being sold for around Dh200,000 at auction. When I first came across it in the mid-1990s, you could buy it for around Dh40,000.

Other ways to buy used products in the UAE
UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.
Bidders and potential buyers register on the online salvage car auction portal to view vehicles, review condition reports, or arrange physical surveys, and then start bidding for motors they plan to restore or harvest for parts.
Physical salvage car auctions are a common method for insurers around the world to move on heavily damaged vehicles, but AWNIC is one of the few UAE insurers to offer such services online.
For cars and less sizeable items such as bicycles and furniture, Dubizzle is arguably the best-known marketplace for pre-loved.
Founded in 2005, in recent years it has been joined by a plethora of Facebook community pages for shifting used goods, including Abu Dhabi Marketplace, Flea Market UAE and Arabian Ranches Souq Market while sites such as The Luxury Closet and Riot deal largely in second-hand fashion.
At the high-end of the pre-used spectrum, resellers such as Timepiece360.ae, WatchBox Middle East and Watches Market Dubai deal in authenticated second-hand luxury timepieces from brands such as Rolex, Hublot and Tag Heuer, with a warranty.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

How to play the stock market recovery in 2021?
If you are looking to build your long-term wealth in 2021 and beyond, the stock market is still the best place to do it as equities powered on despite the pandemic.
Investing in individual stocks is not for everyone and most private investors should stick to mutual funds and ETFs, but there are some thrilling opportunities for those who understand the risks.
Peter Garnry, head of equity strategy at Saxo Bank, says the 20 best-performing US and European stocks have delivered an average return year-to-date of 148 per cent, measured in local currency terms.
Online marketplace Etsy was the best performer with a return of 330.6 per cent, followed by communications software company Sinch (315.4 per cent), online supermarket HelloFresh (232.8 per cent) and fuel cells specialist NEL (191.7 per cent).
Mr Garnry says digital companies benefited from the lockdown, while green energy firms flew as efforts to combat climate change were ramped up, helped in part by the European Union’s green deal.
Electric car company Tesla would be on the list if it had been part of the S&P 500 Index, but it only joined on December 21. “Tesla has become one of the most valuable companies in the world this year as demand for electric vehicles has grown dramatically,” Mr Garnry says.
By contrast, the 20 worst-performing European stocks fell 54 per cent on average, with European banks hit by the economic fallout from the pandemic, while cruise liners and airline stocks suffered due to travel restrictions.
As demand for energy fell, the oil and gas industry had a tough year, too.
Mr Garnry says the biggest story this year was the “absolute crunch” in so-called value stocks, companies that trade at low valuations compared to their earnings and growth potential.
He says they are “heavily tilted towards financials, miners, energy, utilities and industrials, which have all been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic”. “The last year saw these cheap stocks become cheaper and expensive stocks have become more expensive.”
This has triggered excited talk about the “great value rotation” but Mr Garnry remains sceptical. “We need to see a breakout of interest rates combined with higher inflation before we join the crowd.”
Always remember that past performance is not a guarantee of future returns. Last year’s winners often turn out to be this year’s losers, and vice-versa.
