President Sheikh Mohamed has held talks with Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government Masrour Barzani in Abu Dhabi.

During the meeting at Qasr Al Shati on Sunday, the leaders focused on the strong ties shared between the UAE and Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region, state news agency Wam reported.

Sheikh Mohamed and Mr Barzani also explored ways to enhance co-operation across various sectors and exchanged views on "several issues and topics of mutual interest".

In a post on X, Mr Barzani said he had discussed "developments in the region" with the UAE President.

Aziz Ahmad, Mr Barzani's Deputy Chief of Staff, also took to X to announce that the Prime Minister will be making other "regional stops", without giving details. He will then lead a delegation at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland next week.

"Talks regionally are focused on the situation in Syria, changes across the region and the bilateral relationships" between the two countries, Mr Ahmad wrote. "The UAE has been a strong partner to the Kurdistan Region, and trade between both sides has deepened in recent years."

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs; Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs; Sheikh Khalifa bin Tahnoon, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court, and several sheikhs, ministers and senior officials.
