Celtic manager Ronny Deila is adamant his side can reach the lucrative group stages of the Champions League despite seeing his side concede two sloppy goals in a narrow 3-2 win over Malmo in the first leg of their play-off round tie on Wednesday.
A stoppage time strike from Jo Inge Berget means the Scottish champions hopes are now in the balance ahead of next Tuesday’s return leg in Sweden.
Goals from Leigh Griffiths and Nir Bitton inside the opening 10 minutes had put Celtic on course for a seemingly comfortable victory.
However, Berget, who spent a short spell on loan at Celtic last season, grabbed a crucial away goal in the 52nd minute.
Griffiths restored Celtic’s two-goal advantage in the 61st minute before Berget came back to haunt his former employers with a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
It is the third match in a row Celtic have conceded late goals and while Deila couldn’t hide his frustration he stated his belief that Celtic could still qualify.
“We are very irritated with the last thing that happened in the game. But we have to move on and know that we are ahead and we are going to do this in Malmo,” the Celtic manager, whose side suffered disappointment at this stage last season, said.
“I am disappointed, of course, when you concede a goal in the last second but it happened and we have to see it overall.
“We are one goal ahead and they have to beat us in Malmo. It was an okay result, but it could have been a better result.
“We played well at the start of the game, we were all over them and scored two goals so it was a little bit disappointing in the end but I have belief that we can do it in Malmo.
“Of course we can beat Malmo away. But they have to beat us, and that is a positive thing.
“They have to attack us and that can suit us.”
After recovering from being two behind to Red Bull Salzburg from the first leg in the previous round, Malmo manager Age Hareide is confident of victory in Sweden.
When asked if he thought the tie has swung in his side’s favour the Norwegian said:
“I think so. I said before if we got a goal at Celtic Park and there was only one in it then it would be an open game,” said Hareide, who has won just once in seven meetings with his opposite number Deila.
“We like to attack to win. Maybe we should have attacked them even more here, but it is easy to be wise after the game.
“We will attack them at home and play our normal game and hopefully it will be enough.
“It was a terrible start for us. Conceding two goals in the first 10 minutes – I don’t know what happened.
“We gave the ball away far too easily. It may have been the atmosphere. We had some young boys out there and it may have got to them.
“When they conceded the goals they looked a little bit shocked.
“But at 2-1 we had control of the match and Celtic looked tired. We saw against Inverness that they do not have the legs for 90 minutes.
“Then we made silly mistakes and you cannot do that at this level. But they worked their way back into the game and made it 3-2.
“We have a very good chance to beat them at home now and we only need one goal.
“Our fans have the habit of backing us fantastically at home. We will attack and we are up for it.”

Clinical psychologist, Dr Saliha Afridi at The Lighthouse Arabia suggests three easy things you can do every day to cut back on the time you spend online.
1. Put the social media app in a folder on the second or third screen of your phone so it has to remain a conscious decision to open, rather than something your fingers gravitate towards without consideration.
2. Schedule a time to use social media instead of consistently throughout the day. I recommend setting aside certain times of the day or week when you upload pictures or share information.
3. Take a mental snapshot rather than a photo on your phone. Instead of sharing it with your social world, try to absorb the moment, connect with your feeling, experience the moment with all five of your senses. You will have a memory of that moment more vividly and for far longer than if you take a picture of it.
