WARSAW // Ken Doherty made a welcome return to competitive action in the World Series of Snooker which began in Poland yesterday.
By his own admission, the popular Irishman has had a "poor" start to the season having failed to qualify for the first three ranking tournaments.
But the former world champion has been handed a welcome bye into next month's new Bahrain Championship - and has the chance to regain some much-needed form this weekend. Steve Davis, the six-time world champion, Chinese prodigy Ding Junhui and Mark Selby, the Masters and Welsh Open champion, join Doherty at the Warsaw International Expocentre.
And although no ranking points are on offer, Doherty knows three victories would secure him a place in the Grand Finals in Russia - and the chance of pocketing £56,000 (Dh328,000) on offer to the eventual Series champion.
"I've had a frustrating start to the season, but I knew it wasn't going to be easy," revealed Doherty, who dropped out of the elite top 16 last year after 15 consecutive seasons.
"I knew I'd have to go to Pontin's [Holiday Park, Prestatyn] to qualify for tournaments, but I've found it tougher than I thought."
The six-time ranking event winner has been used to playing on super-quick playing surfaces and big audiences.
"You've got one man and his dog watching you, it's pretty hard to adjust too," added the 1997 Crucible champion. "The tables are also a lot slower than at tournaments. I've just got to dig in, practice as hard as I am doing and I'm sure I'll get some luck.
"That's one of the reasons I'm playing in the World Series of Snooker, it's a good chance for me to find some form."
Davis believes the World Series will help spread the snooker word. "What the World Series does is to take top flight snooker to countries who have not had a great deal of exposure," he said.
"The last leg in Berlin was a huge success and, hopefully, Warsaw will be the same."

Stuck in a job without a pay rise? Here's what to do
Chris Greaves, the managing director of Hays Gulf Region, says those without a pay rise for an extended period must start asking questions – both of themselves and their employer.
“First, are they happy with that or do they want more?” he says. “Job-seeking is a time-consuming, frustrating and long-winded affair so are they prepared to put themselves through that rigmarole? Before they consider that, they must ask their employer what is happening.”
Most employees bring up pay rise queries at their annual performance appraisal and find out what the company has in store for them from a career perspective.
Those with no formal appraisal system, Mr Greaves says, should ask HR or their line manager for an assessment.
“You want to find out how they value your contribution and where your job could go,” he says. “You’ve got to be brave enough to ask some questions and if you don’t like the answers then you have to develop a strategy or change jobs if you are prepared to go through the job-seeking process.”
For those that do reach the salary negotiation with their current employer, Mr Greaves says there is no point in asking for less than 5 per cent.
“However, this can only really have any chance of success if you can identify where you add value to the business (preferably you can put a monetary value on it), or you can point to a sustained contribution above the call of duty or to other achievements you think your employer will value.”

What is Financial Fair Play?
Introduced in 2011 by Uefa, European football’s governing body, it demands that clubs live within their means. Chiefly, spend within their income and not make substantial losses.
What the rules dictate?
The second phase of its implementation limits losses to €30 million (Dh136m) over three seasons. Extra expenditure is permitted for investment in sustainable areas (youth academies, stadium development, etc). Money provided by owners is not viewed as income. Revenue from “related parties” to those owners is assessed by Uefa's “financial control body” to be sure it is a fair value, or in line with market prices.
What are the penalties?
There are a number of punishments, including fines, a loss of prize money or having to reduce squad size for European competition – as happened to PSG in 2014. There is even the threat of a competition ban, which could in theory lead to PSG’s suspension from the Uefa Champions League.
