Lewis Hamilton charged through from 14th on the grid to win the German Grand Prix as title rival Sebastian Vettel crashed out while leading.
Hamilton had started from the seventh row after his car had stopped on track during qualifying.
But a mixture of fine overtaking, good strategy and a late rain shower helped get the Briton to the front.
Vettel, who had started on pole in his Ferrari, had looked set for his first win at Hockenheim, but his Ferrari slithered off in damp conditions and hit a barrier with 15 laps to go.
Hamilton had moved up to fifth in the first half of the race, and then gained track position when both his Mercedes-GP teammate Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen pitted for fresh tyres when the safety car came out following Vettel's crash.
Hamilton held off a challenge from Bottas in the closing laps, with the Finn then told to hold station by Mercedes as they secured their first one-two result in Spain, with Raikkonen third.
Hamilton also retakes the lead of the drivers' championship from Vettel, moving 17 points ahead going to the Hungarian Grand Prix next Sunday.
Max Verstappen was fourth for Red Bull Racing, with Nico Hulkenberg's Renault and Romain Grosjean's Haas completing the top six.
